Why ABS Braking Systems Are An Integral Part Of Vehicle Safety Home

Published March 14th, 2017

Anti-lock braking systems are specially designed to help provide better control of a vehicle during adverse driving conditions and avoid the dangers of panic braking. One research study conducted by Australia’s Monash University found that vehicles equipped with ABS systems are 35% less likely to be a part of a collision or accident than a vehicle without anti-lock brakes. This promotes ABS braking systems as an integral part of a vehicle’s safety features.

How does ABS braking work?

The Anti-lock braking system uses wheel sensors, alongside other essential components such as a controller, speed sensors and pumps and valves that sense skid conditions and then activate the ABS. Without this system the instinct would be to go into panic braking mode and drivers attempt to pump the brakes aggressively. The brake actuators in the anti-lock brakes do this automatically, much faster and safer than you would do manually.

The system is also designed to prevent the danger of wheels locking, promoting traction and thus preventing a vehicle from skidding.  When wheels lock, the vehicle is likely to slide dangerously across the road’s surface (especially if the surface is wet), without the driver being able to control the situation. The most effective way to use your ABS system is to push down the brake pedal firmly and not lift off.

Can anti-lock brakes help in adverse weather conditions?

ABS brakes are capable of decreasing the stopping distance required for safe driving on wet roads or icy surface areas. On loose road surfaces however the system can increase the distance for stopping. It is highly advised that you be aware of the surface conditions of the road you are driving on and take appropriate precautions.

Your ABS braking system should be one of the essential components checked during both minor and major vehicle maintenance checks. At ABS Auto in South Melbourne we specialise in all brake servicing and repairs.
